Hey! Checkout the precursor to Grandma Keri days: it’s cousin Keri orchestrating paper plate Easter bonnets at Grandma & Grandpa Penrod’s egg hunt .I’m thinking this was a parade … and wheel barrow ‘float’ too.
I love Easter. It seems Easter morning light glows brighter, the air is softer and the early blossoms are sweeter. I am innately more grateful for Jesus Christ and the hymns of praise touch my heart more deeply on Easter.
As I read the scriptures and the testimonies of the prophets, of Christ’s apostles and disciples in my mind’s eye I am there and I hear Peter teaching, ” For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty.”
I see Stephen, stoned for his testimony of Christ’s divinity and resurrection, as he (Stephen) … being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up steadfastly into heaven … And said, “Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God. ”
I see the risen Christ when He appeared to the people on this continent … And behold, the third time they did understand the voice which they heard; and it said unto them: “Behold my Beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased, in whom I have glorified my name—hear ye him.” … as they understood they cast their eyes up again towards heaven; …they saw a Man descending out of heaven; and he was clothed in a white robe; and he came down and stood in the midst of them; and the eyes of the whole multitude were turned upon him, and they durst not open their mouths, even one to another, and wist not what it meant, for they thought it was an angel that had appeared unto them.
And it came to pass that he stretched forth his hand and spake unto the people, saying: “Behold, I am Jesus Christ, whom the prophets testified shall come into the world. And behold, I am the light and the life of the world; and I have drunk out of that bitter cup which the Father hath given me, and have glorified the Father in taking upon me the sins of the world, in the which I have suffered the will of the Father in all things from the beginning.”
I hear the boy, 14 year old Joseph Smith bearing testimony of his first vision of God the Father and the risen Savior, Jesus Christ: “After I had retired to the place where I had previously designed to go, having looked around me, and finding myself alone, I kneeled down and began to offer up the desires of my heart to God. I had scarcely done so, when immediately I was seized upon by some power which entirely overcame me, and had such an astonishing influence over me as to bind my tongue so that I could not speak. Thick darkness gathered around me, and it seemed to me for a time as if I were doomed to sudden destruction.
But, exerting all my powers to call upon God to deliver me out of the power of this enemy which had seized upon me, and at the very moment when I was ready to sink into despair and abandon myself to destruction—not to an imaginary ruin, but to the power of some actual being from the unseen world, who had such marvelous power as I had never before felt in any being—just at this moment of great alarm, I saw a pillar of light exactly over my head, above the brightness of the sun, which descended gradually until it fell upon me.
It no sooner appeared than I found myself delivered from the enemy which held me bound. When the light rested upon me I saw two Personages, whose brightness and glory defy all description, standing above me in the air. One of them spake unto me, calling me by name and said, pointing to the other—This is My Beloved Son. Hear Him!”
On the morning of His resurrection, I am with Mary in the garden when in sorrow she talks with the risen Christ, Jesus saith unto her, “Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou”? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, “Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away”. Jesus saith unto her, “Mary”. She turned herself, and saith unto him, “Rabboni”; which is to say, Master. Jesus saith unto her, “Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God”.
I love the scriptures, and at Easter their teachings touch my spirit more deeply. The Old Testament prophesies of the coming of the Messiah, our Savior. The New Testament witnesses of His life, death, and resurrection. The Book of Mormon is a second witness of His divinity; His life, death, and resurrection. My heart knows by the witness of the Holy Spirit that the scriptures and their teachings of Christ are true. I know that Jesus rose from His tomb that morning. He lives! He loves us and He will come again as He foretold…doubt not, but be believing.
